Eligibility:

To obtain a Virginia Driver’s License, you must successfully finish a 30-hour driver education program. If you are under 18 and have not yet started a 30-hour course—or if you have failed your Learner’s Permit written test at the DMV three times—our online class will fulfill the requirement for retesting (valid for one year) and grant you a Driver’s Education classroom completion certificate.

Requirements for a Virginia Driver’s License (Under 18)

  1. Complete a state-approved driver education course (this is what our online program covers).
  2. Hold a learner’s permit for a minimum of nine months before you can be granted a driver’s license.
  3. When you finish our online lessons, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Steps to Get Your Virginia Driver’s License (Ages 15½ to 18)

Step 1:  Secure a Learner’s Permit

  • DMV Application: Fill out the Virginia DMV Driver’s License Application (Form DL 1P) and pay the associated fees for both the permit and the license.
  • Parent/Guardian Approval: A parent or guardian must give written consent; this can be done beforehand or in person at the DMV.
  • Tests: You must pass a vision screening and a two-part knowledge exam (covering traffic signs, Virginia driving laws, and safe driving practices).

Recommendation: We suggest applying for your permit after finishing Module 1 of the online course, so you’re well-prepared for the test.

  • Retake Policy: If you fail, you can try again after 15 days. You have three total attempts before you must take an 8-hour Virginia Driver’s Manual Course (3X Fail).
  • Documentation: Social Security Number (if you have one)
An original document showing your full name and birth date (e.g., a birth certificate)
  • Proof of residency (if under 18, a parent or legal guardian can verify your Virginia address in person with their own proof of residency)
  • Fee: Expect a payment of  to cover your permit and license.
Additional Steps: The DMV will take your photo, record organ donor information, and finalize payment.

Military Families:

If you already hold a valid license from another state, you are not required to obtain a Virginia license.
You must provide the usual documentation plus a cover letter about your military family status and details of your current license.
Important: Submit this to the main DMV office in Richmond, as local DMV branches cannot process exceptions. Approval can take one to three weeks.

Step 2: Finish the Online Course and Start Behind-the-Wheel Lessons

  1. Online Course: Complete the 30-hour curriculum through Accelerated Driving School.
  2. Final Exam: Once you’ve done all online modules, schedule your final test at our driving school.
  3. Behind-the-Wheel: After passing, arrange your hands-on driving instruction with a certified instructor.
  4. 90-Minute Parent/Teen Module: In Virginia, teens under 18 and their parent/guardian must complete an additional 90-minute component, included within our online course.

Step 3: Complete Your In-Car Training and Required Driving Hours
Our package option combines the online course with behind-the-wheel training, led by a qualified instructor.
If you choose Online Classroom Only, you can pay separately for behind-the-wheel sessions later.
After finishing your drive times, you will take an official road skills test with our instructor. If you pass, you’ll receive a temporary license on the spot.

Step 4: Get Your Permanent License
After your successful road test, the DMV will mail your permanent license.
